Reading

Reading at Kelsall Primary & Nursery School

Ensuring children develop 'a love of reading' from an early age is a key priority for us at Kelsall. Reading unlocks so many doors in regards to children's enjoyment of the written word, development of their imagination and progression in regards to their academic attainment.  Our approach to reading is to nurture and develop this love through providing current and engaging texts which children freely choose themselves and twinning this with interactive activities which assess children's understanding of what is read in regards to content, tone and inference. These activities allow teachers to accurately monitor a child's progression within reading and highlight areas for development which can be addressed in order to overcome barriers to progression.

Our teaching of Reading includes:

  • Immersive texts through the Pathways to Read programme.
  • Accelerated Reader - interactive activities to assess children's understanding of what is read,
  • Child led selection of books - children choose what they read - not what they are told to,
  • Regular theme days and reading events such as World Book Day, No Outsiders assemblies and schema of work.

Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader is a program that helps teachers and parents manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice. Your child picks a book at his/her own level, reads it and when finished, takes a short quiz on a computer. Passing the quiz is an indication that your child has understood what has been read. AR gives children, parents and teachers feedback based on the quiz results which then informs and helps the child’s development within reading.
